Careers at Alderman Cogan’s

Alderman Cogan’s Academy is a Voluntary Aided Church of England Primary Academy with more than 400 pupils on roll.  The pupils here enjoy coming to school and have a desire for learning.  They also enjoy the wide range of extra-curricular activities offered to them.  Their enthusiasm is infectious.

Alderman Cogan’s also has supportive parents, some of whom are ex-pupils of the school.  The Governing Body works very hard and likes to be involved in the life of the school in a variety of ways.  The school employs teachers, learning support staff, child supervisory support officers (breakfast/lunchtime leaders), administrative staff and a caretaking and cleaning team.  We also engage other visiting professionals from the education and health services.

The school is in a great position geographically with the potential to further develop links with the community and we continue to strive to enhance our building and develop the grounds to improve our learning environment.  

Our school is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people and expects all staff and volunteers to share this commitment. We promote the sharing of knowledge and invest strongly in training and development.  When they join our team staff members are given a thorough Induction programme. We think it is vital that staff members feel part of the school from their first day and try and integrate them into the school as soon as possible.

Teachers

Alderman Cogan’s is committed to employing high quality enthusiastic and dedicated teachers, both experienced and newly qualified.  

Our teachers are expected to have:

All newly qualified teachers are entitled to an individually structured support and training programme during their initial teaching year, provided by the school and supported by the Ebor Academy Trust.

Teaching Assistants

A teaching assistant’s role is interesting, challenging and rewarding. The role is very comprehensive and includes general in-class support, working with small groups of children, working with individual children and supporting children with special educational needs or behavioural difficulties. Experienced teaching assistants are sometimes asked to take whole classes independently with advice from teachers.  Some of our teaching assistants have progressed to become HLTA’s (Higher Level Teaching Assistants) and some have become teachers, having gained a degree followed by qualified teacher status.  To be employed as a teaching assistant at our school it is essential to have an NVQ Level 2 in Supporting Teaching and Learning (or equivalent qualification) plus good numeracy and literacy skills and experience of working with school-age children.
